Tunics for women: timeless tops in a variety of styles
Despite being around for such a long time, tunics are still on-trend. Back in Roman times this garment was an essential item in women’s wardrobes—and to this day, tunics for women have never gone out of style. With their relaxed cut, it’s easy to see why these blouses are still so popular, as they are both comfortable and available in a multitude of styles, from bohemian to vintage and classic.
Tunics for women are simply a must-have. These versatile tops work well in formal settings and casual occasions alike. Their flattering, relaxed cut suits both slender and curvier figures, and allows for a wide range of styles.
Comfortable ladies’ tunics in bold colours or floral prints are made for sunny days in the city as well as balmy evening cocktails—but a tunic looks just as good in muted pastel tones and elegant fabrics, with a sophisticated detail to the neckline or hem—not to mention embroidery or dazzling embellishments such as beads and sequins. At MONA, we‘ve never forgotten the ladies’ tunic—instead, we‘ve always included it in our collections. This look is best when paired with jeans or stylish cropped trousers.
All women’s tunics have one thing in common: they come in a light, relaxed cut. However, this basic shape can be modified in many ways.
Sleeves: tunics may be sleeveless to keep you cool on a warm day, designed with wide batwing sleeves for easy movement or chic trumpet sleeves for additional warmth on a cool summer evening or during a spring day.
Cut and neckline: The fit can be straight, or your tunic may come in an empire line cut. Asymmetrical hemlines work well with this incredibly varied item, as do wrap finishes. Necklines can vary from a slimming V-neck to a sophisticated carmen neckline, but one fact remains the same—tunics are always effortless.
Colours and details: these are entirely up to personal tastes, with every imaginable design available. Floral prints for the first days of spring, elegant tunics in high quality fabrics in understated colours, lace trims or beaded embellishments around the neckline—tunics have it all.
And with boho being all the rage, this is the perfect garment to tap into the timeless trend. A tunic with slightly bohemian design will easily convey a retro feel.
Tunics can work all year round. They’ll keep you at ease during formal events, and allow you to shine at a family gathering. Here are just a few styling ideas for some of the many designs available at MONA.
For bright summer days and warm summer evenings, a women’s tunic in a bright colour or boho print is an excellent choice. Another option is a romantic, floral design complete with lace and beads. A short sleeved tunic will go well with shorts or cropped trousers and stylish summer sandals.
You can wear a ladies’ tunic at more formal events, too. Choose muted, classic colours like dark blue, grey or white. The neckline should not be too revealing and details should be minimal—a simple round neck is always a good option. Together with slim trousers—preferably in black or dark grey—and elegant court shoes, you are all set to look polished at your next formal event.
A tunic is just the ticket for a party, since you’ll feel comfortable and be able to move easily all while looking your best. Shimmering, flowing fabrics or sequins and beads complete a party piece, which can be teamed with trousers or leggings and high heels.
Smart dress codes
If you want to exude understated elegance at a sophisticated soirée, a monochrome women’s tunic combined with slim trousers and court shoes is guaranteed to turn heads—and you can complete this elegant ensemble with eye-catching earrings or a necklace.
Tunics for women in winter
There’s no need to put away your tunics when the weather starts to turn cold. Since ladies’ tunics come in a relaxed cut, you can wear a long sleeve top under your favourite tunic and pair it with thermal leggings or jeans and a pair of boots. Boho patterns in rich hues are a great choice in autumn and winter.
As with any top or blouse, when your tunic has been worn or is stained, it needs to be washed. Most tunics can be put into the washing machine, but you should make sure to read the instructions on the label first.
Cotton or blended fabrics can usually be machine washed at 40°C. For coloured fabrics, use a colour detergent, and avoid using softener if the tunic contains elastane or Lycra.
If your tunic can be machine washed but is decorated with ribbons, tassels or beads, turn it inside out and put it in a laundry net – using the delicate cycle with gentle spin.
Many tunics dry best on a clothes hanger, and some don’t need to be ironed.
Festive tunics with sequins and embroidery may need to be either dry cleaned or washed by hand.
